SUITCASE & CO.
During five months of the 2020 pandemic lockdown, one live subject posed for 60 safe-distanced, silent, three-hour sittings. A distinct constellation of personality-facets surfaced through these paintings. Suitcase & Co. is a series of watercolor on paper paintings made in tandem to the oil on canvas series titled, Think Twice.

When contemplating the sitting experience, the sitter identified these specific abstracted states within the paintings. Through a process of intuitive triangulation, characters began to emerge — entities that provided a palette for focusing elusive abstracted states into personalities.

It was the oscillation of attention between the paintings, specific recollections about the sitting, and subsequent associations to deep distant memories that allowed the sitter to first conjure and then identify these internal, and for her, eternal, states of being.

The first character identification emerged when the sitter saw this April 8th painting. "Suitcase!" she exclaimed -- the name of the chained pit-bull of her divorced Dad. "Don't go near that dog," her mother had warned.

There was never any intention to conjure specific character-states during the sittings. It was only on reflection and discussion that the sitter narrated via the painted characters. As these foils would recur across multiple sessions, she named them Suitcase, Agnes, Lily, Stewart, and Spencer. Thus the series title, Suitcase & Co.
